Lady Gaga became pregnant aged 19, as a result of a traumatic sexual assault by a male music producer.
Talking to Oprah as part of Apple Tv’s new documentary The Me You Can’t See, the star suffered a “psychotic break” following the attack. The male music producer, whose name is still unknown, threatened to burn Lady Gaga’s music if she did not take her clothes off.
Breaking down when recalling the details, the singer recalls that “she just froze”. The rapist then left her vomiting and sick in a corner. She later discovered she was pregnant from the attack.
Her breakdown, which caused a complete psychotic break years later, left the singer in a state of extreme paranoia. Although she feels she has recovered from the attack, a simple “trigger” can bring all of the negative feelings of physical and emotional pain back.
In 2019, the singer was admitted to hospital after her body went numb following a period of extreme pain. Being sick for weeks, she realised “it was the same pain that I felt when the person who raped me dropped me off”. After numerous MRI’s and scans revealed no medical cause for her pain, she understands the body remembers the trauma.
After years of effort, Lady Gaga can now “pull herself out of it” when the negativity becomes overwhelming.
A brave Lady Gaga will never disclose her attackers name
Lady Gaga never wants to face her attacker. The singer, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, understands the Me Too movement is making people comfortable coming forward. However, she “does not want to fact that person again”.
It is not the first time Lady Gaga has shared details of her sexual assault. In 2014, she began to address the attack in songs such as Swine and ‘Til it happens to you. These songs are part of the soundtrack for The Hunting Ground. A documentary that explores sexual assault at US College Campus’s. It was nominated for an Oscar in 2016.
Performing the song at the 2016 Academy Awards, she invited survivors on stage with her. She has been a vocal advocate for the survivors for years, despite suffering PTSD when accepting her award for Shallow. Speaking to Stephen Colbert on his Late Show, Lady Gaga explains that trauma like assault changes the brain.
The singer finished her interview with Oprah on a positive note saying she kept going and wants any adult who has been through so much “to know they can keep going too”. She encourages victims to “ask for help when they are ready”.
