Damiano David, the lead singer of Eurovision winner Italian glam rock band, Maneskin, is cleared of allegations of taking drugs during the show. The news comes following an investigation by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
After conducting their investigation, and a negative drug test, the EBU state “no drug use took place in the Green Room and we consider the matter closed”. Before giving their verdict, some people were even calling for the Italians to be disqualified over the growing speculation.
The allegations arose after speculation online that the singer was taking cocaine during the televised show on Saturday night. Footage appeared showing Damiano David leaning over a table. This led many viewers to question what he was doing with his face bent towards the table.
The image, caught during the live broadcast as the band celebrated their victory. MÃ¥neskin, who were one of the favourites, won the contest with their song Zitti e Buoni.
“Inaccurate speculation”
David strongly denied all allegations and was upset that it was overshadowing what should have been a joyous event. Instead of celebrating their win, the band were having to defend themselves. The false accusations soon marred the feelings of happiness. He insisted that he never used drugs, and pleaded with people to stop saying it.
In response to the allegations, the band stated on Instagram they were “AGAINST drugs” and “never used cocaine”. They openly agreed to take a drugs test to prove their innocence, as they had nothing to hide.
At a press conference, David said he looked down at that moment because guitarist Thomas Raggi broke a glass. The EBU later confirmed that broken glass was found on the floor next to where the band were sitting. In addition, it is also seen in the television footage.
The EBU is “alarmed that inaccurate speculation leading to fake news has overshadowed the spirit and the outcome of the event and unfairly affected the band”. They congratulate Maneskin and wish them every success. As this year’s winners, the Eurovision Song Contest will be hosted in Italy next year. The EBU say they look forward to working with Italian member Rai on producing a spectacular show.
MÃ¥neskin’s win is the first victory for Italy at the singing contest since 1990.
