Elliot Page is praised for sharing an image showing his bare-chest for the first time since having top surgery. The actor came out as transgender in December.
The image posted on Instagram shows Page posing in swimming shorts by the pool. The actor is clearly smiling as he shares his first picture after top surgery. The hashtags #transjoy and #transisbeautiful appear alongside it.
Speaking last month in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, 34 year old Page described his top surgery as “life-saving”. It made him “feel comfortable” in his body “for probably the first time”, and is the thing that has brought him “most joy” in transitioning. The star tearfully explained how great it was to step out of the shower with just a towel around his waist, as he could look in the mirror and see the real him.
The procedure is part of the process of transitioning from a woman to a man by removing breast tissue.
The Instagram post has already received over two million likes and garnered plenty of support from other celebrities praising his new appearance. It includes supportive comments from actor Justin Cornwell, Hollywood actress Julianne Moore and Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev who thinks he looks “amazing” and “happy”. Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus simply commented the word “hot” alongside a heart emoji. And Jameela Jamil tweeted she was pleased to see Page “thriving”.
Winfrey also joined in by reposting the image on the Oprah Daily Instagram account, with the comment, “This is what happiness looks like!”. She added that it “looks like Elliot will be shining brighter than the sun this summer”.
‘Freeing experience’
Page is a prominent advocate for LGBT and also reveals the surgery gave him new energy in fighting for trans rights. He describes the experience as totally life changing and “freeing”. He believes that it was life saving, and will be to so many others too.
Laws in the US, particularly the state of Arkansas, ban young transgender people from accessing certain medical treatments. This is something that Page is legally fighting.
The Canadian born actor’s big film breakthrough came from starring in the lead role of Juno in 2007. In the movie she plays a pregnant teenager, a role which landed an Oscar nomination. Previous credits also include parts in major films Inception and the X-Men series. But he is most recently known for starring in Netflix superhero show Umbrella Academy.
Page came out as gay in 2014, saying “I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission”. He divorced his choreographer wife Emma Portner in February, after three years of marriage.
