Long running medical drama Holby City is ending next year after 23 years, the BBC has announced.
In March next year, Holby City is ending to “make room for new opportunities”. The cancellation of the drama coincides with the BBC’s announcement to move some of its departments and staff outside of London. This is in an attempt to make BBC shows more reflective of the country.
The announcement finishes with the BBC stating that the drama is a “stalwart” with audiences. The drama, which started in 1999, regularly entertains “millions of viewers each week”. The main priority for the award winning drama currently is to ensure that it goes out on a high.
Holby City moving to make room for new BBC shows
In March, the BBC pledged to spend £700 million in spending and creating new jobs outside of London.
BBC are looking to produce two new shows over the next three years. The soap style shows will be set in the North of England and the nations.
The BBC’s new mission is to ensure “every household gets value from the BBC”. The show wants to ensure they get closer to audiences, jobs and investments in a huge shake up this year. Entitled “Across the UK”, the strategy is being touted as the most radical reorganisations in the channels history.
Political pressure plays a part in the BBC shake up. However, a bigger threat to the BBC is competition from Amazon and Netflix. The BBC want to dominate in story telling so people still want to continue paying the license fee.
