Aaron Ramsdale joins England’s Euro 2020 squad to replace injured goalkeeper Dean Henderson.
The England team suffered a setback as Manchester United keeper Henderson was forced to withdrawn from the tournament with a hip issue. The injury caused him to miss a second day of training sessions. It was thought that the problem would “continue to limit his involvement in training” throughout the tournament. The player will now return to his home club in Manchester for further assessment and treatment ahead of the 2021/22 football season.
Under UEFA Euro 2020 rules, teams are allowed to replace goalkeepers throughout the tournament on medical grounds, if needed.
Sheffield United’s Ramsdale is called up to play in Henderson’s place. He has no senior England caps, but formed part of Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad prior to the tournament. The 23 year old is now one of three goalkeepers in the squad. He joins Everton’s Jordan Pickford and West Brom’s Sam Johnstone.
Before allowing entrance into the England camp, Ramsdale will need to follow Covid-19 testing protocol.
Group D
The team will not let the loss of their main goalkeeper phase them though, as the Three Lions face Scotland in their next match. The second Group D game is at Wembley on Friday 18 June at 20:00 BST, where a win will help confirm their qualification for the knockout stages. Other members of Group D, Croatia and the Czech Republic, will also play each other on Friday.
England won their first match 1-0 against Croatia on Sunday. Meanwhile, Scotland suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Czech Republic on Monday. The final deciding games in Group D are playing next Tuesday evening 22 June.
