UK unprepared for Climate Change Chaos

Government advisors warn that the UK is unprepared to deal with the Climate Change chaos that is currently underway.

A report on Climate Change by the CCC finds the government is underprepared for even a 2 degree rise in temperature

The Climate Change Committee is predicting that the UK will suffer as climate change hits harder than it was first believed.

The weather that the UK currently experiences is only going to get worse. We will experience extreme heatwaves along with destructive flash flooding. It will increase the flood risk across the UK, with winter rainfall becoming 40% more intense. The creators of the report are calling for homes to be “climate proofed”. That homes, services and infrastructures need to act now in order to prepare for floods, heat and humid nights.

The damning report claims the UK is now even less prepared than when they ran a similar report five years ago. Without immediate action, global warming could case damage running into the billions of pounds in a short time.

Chris Stark, the Climate Change Committees Chief Executive, says the lack of progress is frustrating. They believe that the government are inadequately prepared to deal with even a 2 degree change. Speaking to BBC, he claims the Government “are not thinking about what lies ahead”.

Inadequate climate change preparation to cause chaos?

Kathryn Brown of the Climate Change Committee is working hard to spread awareness of climate change. She insists that the Government is responsible for ensuring people in flats are protected against the heat. She wants architectural features to be added to every new build to protect it from the suns rays.

According to the CCC report, over 500,000 homes have been built to inadequately. If nothing is done, and the heat continues to rise, houses and buildings will not be able to cope. The heat can cause problems to other aspects of life such as power, transport and even sewage.

With a continued pledge to turn the UK into a low carbon economy, the reliance on electricity is higher than ever. Power cuts, which will happen more frequently with the extreme weather, can damage our country. An example of this is when a lightning storm resulted in power cuts across England. The loss of power affected both road and rail as UK travel came to a stand still.

A government spokesperson has refuted claims that the Government are not acting to conquer climate change. In a statement, they say climate change is “integrated” across various departments of the Government.

Continuing, he reiterates that the UK was among some of the first to set a target of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The Government plan to “further reduce emissions by 78% by 2035”. They concluded by saying they will be considering the recommendations closely ahead of COP26 in November.
