McFly and McBusted singer Tom Fletcher, along with his with Giovanna, have apologised for using the Government furlough scheme.
A report in The Sun newspaper claims the superstar couple claimed £30,000 to furlough an employee. This is despite the couple having a joint worth of approximately £8 million.
The couple released a joint statement via their Instagram page. In the post, they admit following “financial advice to furlough” someone in their employment. They go on to dispute the amount they had claimed throughout the furlough scheme, saying “the figures mentioned are inaccurate”.
Superstar Tom Fletcher, along with author Giovanna Fletcher, say the money was used for a staff member. The employee could not work due to the pandemic, so they found “the most effective way to give them job stability”.
Admitting their mistake in “a time of great uncertainty”, they believe they should have funded the scheme themselves. They claim to have paid the money back in full. They end the post by apologising for their “huge error in judgement”.
Were Tom Fletcher and Giovanna in the wrong?
Many fans took to social media to tell the couple they were in the right to use the furlough scheme. That the money a company holds is not the same as the couples personal wealth. They go on to explain that, by using the furlough scheme, they offer their employees “a safety net”. This safety net prevents employees from being made redundant during already trying times.
Others, who believe the couple were wrong, have given credit to the couple for their apology. The couple take credit for everything they have done which is perceived to be wrong before taking action to correct it.
The couple have always had an open, honest relationship with their fans. The sincere apology states the couple “should have thought more about the situation and funded it themselves”.
