Advisors are urging Government officials to tell UK public to eat less meat. By eating less meat and dairy produce, the Government can help protect the environment and reduce Climate Change effects.
The Climate Change Committee says people need to reduce their meat intake for their health, as well as the planet. It days this is one of the Governments “many failings”, that see’s them only delivering on a fifth of its promises.
People will be asked to eat 20% less meat and dairy by 2020, and 35% less by 2050. The CCC ask Prime Minister Boris Johnson to produce evidence to back healthy eating and set clear food diets. They do say that Boris Johnson’s leadership in climate is “remarkable” but it is undermined by inadequate policies.
A spokesperson for the Government says the Net Zero Strategy due in Autumn will show where Carbon Cuts will imposed. The CCC says a failing on the part of the Government is not engaging the public on what changes are needed.
Environment group Friends of the Earth backs the Climate Change Committees criticism, calling them “spot on”. They call for all ministers to commit to a ‘net zero test’ to ensure their dedications are compatible. All future projects currently face a delay by the Treasury Net Zero review. This review determines how much of the cash will be invested in the zero carbon economy.
Is the Government worried enough about Climate Change?
The Global temperature is continuing to rise steeply. Despite this, the Government says that accusations of them not being effective against climate change is incorrect. The UK is leading the rest of the G7 countries with a 44% drop in emissions.
In the past few months, the Government are making record investment in wind power. They are pledging £5.2 billion in flood and sea defences and have plans to decarbonise heavy industry and North Sea Oil. Many businesses around the UK are committing to being Net Zero by 2050.
The Government says the policies will meet what the Climate Change Committee is calling for. They are “redoubling their efforts” going forward. This is in an attempt to end the UK’s contribution to climate change.
Food production directly affects the environment because of water and land. By switching to a mainly plant based diet, instead of eating a lot of meat, it uses fewer resources. The Government are set to analyse whether there is a way to eat meat sustainably without giving it up altogether.
