British tennis player Andy Murray beat the odds again as he reaches the third round of Wimbledon 2021. He won in a thriller of a match on Centre Court against German Oscar Otte.
At one point, Murray, 34, led by a set and a break but momentum shifted to newcomer Otte, who is ranked 151st in the world. The Scot looked weary as Otte took the third set for a 2-1 lead, before darkness ended play. But Murray fought back to eventually win the match 6-3 4-6 4-6 6-4 6-2.
As part of the government’s events programme, 7,500 attended the event at Centre Court. Britain’s former number one urged the crowd for more support in the fourth set, and they soon got behind him. They cheered and chanted as he played to victory.
In 2019, Murray thought he would have to retire due to a serious hip injury, so is delighted to still play this year and continue on in the tournament. The star has had a series of niggling injuries since having career saving surgery.
Tension and excitement
Commenting on the match, Murray says he enjoyed the end, but not so much the middle part. He says the atmosphere and crowd were “amazing”, and that he needed their help to get him “fired up”.
Two days earlier, the tennis star beat Georgian 24th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili in another incredible match at the All England Club. That battle was paused too to close the roof of Centre Court, after which Murray returned with a new energy.
Following a 15 minute break, Otte and Murray resumed play, with the latter taking control after winning seven of the next nine games. Although tension and excitement mounted as Murray struggled to hold serve. In a moment of brilliance, his victory was sealed with a lob that left Murray smiling and Centre Court erupting.
The two time champion will now face Canadian 10th seed Denis Shapovalov in the third round on Friday. 22 year old Shapovalov went through on Wednesday after his opponent, Spaniard Pablo Andujar, pulled out because of a rib injury.
