Former US President Barack Obama scales back plans for a big party to celebrate his 60th birthday as Covid infections continue to rise nationwide.
Mr Obama, who turned 60 on Wednesday, had plans for a huge celebration this weekend on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. However, due to the highly contagious Delta variant causing a surge in positive Covid cases, he has decided to scale back the event. The only people attending now will be family and close friends.
Saturday’s outdoor celebration was planned months ago “in accordance with all public health guidelines”. But in light of the latest coronavirus situation, Mr Obama and his wife Michelle think it is best to limit the size of the party.
A spokesperson for Mr Obama says the former president “is appreciative of others sending their birthday wishes from afar and looks forward to seeing people soon”.
Media reports suggest hundreds of people originally received invites to the occasion. Rumour has it that the star studded guest list included talk show host Oprah Winfrey, actor George Clooney and director Steven Spielberg.
Increasing concerns
However, as numbers of Covid cases have grown, so too has criticism about the event.
Daily cases are on the rise again in America, reaching an average not seen in months. This has led to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announcing requirements for mask wearing indoors. This applies to everybody, regardless of their vaccination status.
The Obamas are urging people to get their vaccinations, and had encouraged people to take tests prior to attending their event. Speaking about it this week, White House press secretary Jen Psaki advises attendees “to follow public health guidelines”. She believes the former president “would certainly advocate” this himself as well.
Meanwhile, current US president Joe Biden, has reportedly chosen not to attend the party. He served as vice-president when Mr Obama was in office.
