Godzilla vs Kong smashes box office

The pandemic didn’t stop Godzilla Vs Kong which has set a new global record. It has grossed over $385 million (£205m) in the last two weeks.

In the United States, New York and Los Angeles have allowed audiences to return for the first time since Covid19. These audiences align with pandemic precautions. Taking $48.5m in the first five days, despite the limitations, is a boost for the cinema industry.

The numbers don’t lie – its clear that wherever audiences are ready to safely return to the theatre, they have, and we’re thrilled with the results.

Jeff Goldstein, President of domestic distribution at Warner Bros.

Over 1,000 shows sold out, according a report by IMAX. Chief Executive Rich Gelfond believes its a “symbol of enduring strength of the theatrical experience for blockbuster film making”. Making over $32m in its opening weekend is almost double that of Wonder Woman 1984.

The film currently stands at $236m outside of the US. The film is yet to open in Japan, Brazil or Western Europe, so takings are still yet to spike. Over half the sales made have been in China.

The $48.5m it made in the first five days has even outpaced the previous Godzilla films in the franchise. The film, which is available to stream on the HBO service, has also been cheered by cinema operators.

According to the numbers.com, the last film in the franchise made $383m in the worldwide box office. Godzilla in 2014 was the biggest moneymaker, grossing $529m. With a history this successful, Godzilla certainly has a set a standard.

Godzilla Vs Kong is due in UK Cinemas next month, with Cineworld announcing they will open 127 cinemas on May 17th 2021. UK Cinemas are hopeful that the US trend continues. The successful US reopening is a beacon of hope for an industry that has suffered during the pandemic.
