The potential roll out of Covid 19 passports is “the right thing to do” according to vaccine minister Nadhim Zahawi. He admitted that the requirement to show vaccine certification, could prove problematic. However, using the passports for attending pubs and restaurants is “only the right thing to do”.
The United Kingdoms fast roll out of the vaccine means 31,581,623 people have received their doses, either singular or both. Lockdown restrictions continue to ease, the next of which is outdoor hospitality and non essential retail. These are due to open on the 12th April. On May 17th, more restrictions will be lifted, allowing people to eat indoors.
You will not need to prove Covid certification to enter shops or use public transport, but settings such as theatres, festivals and nightclubs will need Covid certification.
How will Covid 19 passports work?
Will the passports be based on vaccine, proving you have had a negative test or that you have antibodies from fighting the disease? Mr Zahawi has defended the governments decision to keep the possibility of future Covid passports open. They will be holding a review into Covid certification – headed by Minister Michael Gove – in the next few months.
Labour Shadow Health Secretary Jonathon Ashworth accused ministers of causing confusion regarding the new domestic passports. The growing backlash could see Prime Minister Boris Johnson face a battle in the House of Commons to get Covid passports authorised.
Mr Johnson reportedly told a news outlet:
First of all we need to work out exactly what the proposal might be. But, certainly, if there is something to be put to parliament I have no doubt that we will be doing that.
