The US are set to sanction Russia for cyber attacks, including their alleged interference in the 2020 presidential elections. These sanctions come at what is a tense time for relations between the US and Russia.
According to reports, the American government is ready to issue a wide range of sanctions against Russia. This is in a move to retaliate for cyber attacks aimed at the country.
The sanctions target over 30 Russian entities, including Diplomats, and involve the expulsion of at least 10 individuals from the US.
Rumour is, that the administration of US President Joe Biden will issue an order to start in June, which will bar US financial institutions from purchasing ruble-denominated bonds.
In a call on Tuesday, Biden told Russian President Vladimir Putin that the US would “act firmly” in defence of its national interests. He also proposed they meet somewhere on neutral ground to allow them to find areas to work together.
In a televised interview last month, Biden admitted thinking that Putin was a “killer”. He also said that the Us would no longer just “roll over” for the Russian president.
SolarWinds hack
Cyber security researchers identified a hack last year in a piece of software called SolarWinds. This intrusion allowed cyber criminals to gain access to 18,000 government and private computer networks. These hackers gained access to digital files of US government agencies including the Treasury, Justice and State Departments.
Intelligence officials believe Russia to be behind the attack. They think the Russian president directed online efforts to aid Donald Trump win a second term of US presidency.
According to Microsoft president Brad Smith, the SolarWinds hack is “the largest and most sophisticated attack the world has ever seen”.
In anticipation of the new sanctions, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “the hostility and unpredictability of America’s actions force us in general to be prepared for the worst scenarios”.
