I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! had to change locations last year due to the pandemic, filming in Gwrych castle rather than the usual Australian jungle. Gwrych Castle, near Abergyle, has undergone repairs two years ahead of schedule, according to the Chief of the Castle Trust.
The castle has since reopened, allowing the public to visit the key areas featured on the show. This includes the outdoor toilets and the kiosk where they would win prizes. It is now open again, with these renovations.
The I’m a Celebrity effect
The castle first opened to the public in 1880. It was built between 1810 and 1825 by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh in memory of his mother. Open to visitors until 1980 but numerous owners have failed to make it a success. Subsequently, it fell into a state of disrepair with no floors or roof. In 2018, the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust purchased the building and started to plan repairs.
The Chairman of the Trust, Mark Baker, confirmed that the show had accelerated the original plans. The castle had the plans in place, including expert advice and contractors. The Trust were working hard to raise the funds needed. ITV stepped in and financed repairs to wall tops and window lintels. The castle can now fully open to the public, something they could not do until now.
In addition to repairs to the castle, the castle is receiving more visitors. Thomas Rye, a worker at the hospital, said that the interest has shot up since the world watched the castle on TV. As well as visitors, the castle are receiving hundreds of emails from people who want to volunteer.
