Three Tesco stores in Birmingham have been selling out of date food. Customers bought food passed its sell by date from two Tesco stores in Bournville and the City Centre, and a Metro in Bristol South Road.
Tesco stores Ltd admitted to the twenty two breaches of Food and Hygiene Regulations. Tesco are required to pay £7.56 million for the offences, which were committed in 2016 and 2017.
The sentence, passed by Birmingham Magistrates Court, includes an additional £95,500 for prosecution costs. An investigation was ordered by Environmental Health Department after complaints were made.
Tesco has taken immediate action to rectify the problems brought to light. The Metro store is now Jacks, a discount store of Tesco’s.
Offending Tesco stores moving forward, with the help of City Council
Welwyn Garden City head office is in the authority of Hertfordshire City Council. HCC are now externally approving all date checking by the offending stores.
A spokesperson for Tesco said they are disappointed about the three stores selling out of date food in 2016/2017. Continuing to explain customer safety has always been, and will always be, a priority for Tesco. We took action immediately, and have procedures in place to ensure this doesn’t happen again.
It is a legal regulation that supermarkets put Use By stickers on food such as eggs, dairy, meat and fish. Foods that carry a health risk if they are eaten after the suggested expiry date.
Best before dates and Use By dates are different. Best before dates, usually found on fruit and vegetables, suggest the food will not taste as fresh past this date. They are still edible and should not cause issues.
