A twelve person jury took less than 24 hours to find Derek Chauvin guilty of murdering George Floyd. The end result of a three week trial that has gained mass coverage across the world and left Minneapolis on edge.
Police pulled the 46 year old over after a store owner reported he allegedly used a counterfeit $20 to buy cigarettes. The police handcuffed George Floyd and a struggle ensued. Mr Floyd begged for his life over 20 time and pleaded for his mother in the nine minutes.
On May 25th last year, Derek Chauvin knelt on the neck of African American George Floyd. He knelt on George’s neck for over nine minutes, suffocating him. The footage went viral and sparked the Black Lives Matter movement. The world was enraged, worldwide protests against racism along with discussions around police brutality, discussions that are continuing to this day.
Derek Chauvin is guilty of three different counts; second degree murder, third degree murder and manslaughter. He is now awaiting sentencing which will happen in upcoming months. People believe that he will appeal the conviction.
Second degree murder has a maximum sentence of forty years in prison, third degree murder can be up to twenty five years and manslaughter is ten years in prison. Derek Chauvin could spend up to 75 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd.
The world celebrates George Floyd trial outcome
Hundreds of people outside the court cheered in celebration at the announcement of the verdict. Social media messages, story’s and posts showed solidarity in the celebration.
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris made a personal call to the George Floyd’s family after the verdict. It is reported he said “at least now there is some justice”. After the phone call, in his national broadcast, he said “systematic racism is a stain on the whole nation’s soul”
Vice President Kamala Harris has been working hard to have the George Floyd Bill passed in America. The legislation aims to combat police misconduct, racial bias and aggresson.
The three officers who were with Derek Chauvin during the murder will go on trial for aiding and abetting charges.
