Queen Elizabeth turns 95 today, just days after the touching funeral of her husband Prince Philip. Her birthday celebrations will be both quiet and private, although her family will join her throughout the day.
Buckingham Palace has released a picture of the Queen smiling to mark this special occasion. The photograph is one taken in February 2020. No new picture of the Queen is to be released today, as her birthday falls within the national mourning period. The mourning period will last for two weeks following the death of her husband on April 9th.
This mourning period, along with ongoing Covid restrictions, also has stopped the tradition of the Westminster Bells. On the birthday of a royal, in particular a senior royal, the bells in Westminster ring out in celebration. However, today they will remain silent.
Other traditions held as part of the Queens Official Celebrations, such as Trooping the Colour held in June, has been cancelled for the second consecutive year.
Queen Elizabeth – a life in service of the Crown
Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth is the longest reigning monarch in history, ascending the throne in 1952. When King Edward VIII abdicated in 1936, Queen Elizabeth’s father George VI took the crown. Queen Elizabeth became a future Queen overnight.
As the rest of the world, Queen Elizabeth’s working days have changed due o the pandemic. Her and Philip spent the 12 months of lockdown isolating together. Visits, and the working calls with Prime Minister Boris Johnson, are now conducted as phone calls rather than in person.
Following a tough year for the Queen, with the allegations raised by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after stepping down, the Queen will celebrate quietly today. We wish her a Happy Birthday.
