A study conducted by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) has found that exercise can cut the risk of death from Covid 19 by a third.
Prominent immunologists, people who study immune systems, and epidemiologists, people who study how certain diseases affect people and why, carried out a full review. This review involved over 16,698 worldwide studies. These studies were spread over forty years, from 1980 to 2020.
The research, which has since been published in the Sports Medicine Journal, has shown that exercise can help cut Covid 19 deaths.
This is the worlds first study into the link of Covid 19 immunity. The results show that just 30 minutes a day of physical activity can benefit you should you get the disease. This activity can vary; walking, HIIT, running, cycling, swimming. They all count, as long as it gets your heart rate up and leaves you slightly out of breath.
Another groundbreaking revolution, which will undoubtedly revolutionise the current vaccine rollout, is that regular exercise can make the vaccine 40% more effective. Sebastien Chastin, a professor in health behaviour dynamics, has said that regular exercise can strengthen the immune system and create a higher amount of immune cells.
He continued that research proves that regular exercise boosts your disease immunity by 31% and strengthens your first line of defence should you get ill. Perhaps a little late, the study suggests a 12 week regular workout plan to increase the vaccines effectiveness. It has to be a regular workout, with commitment, to work.
NHS launches obesity campaign as Covid 19 lockdown eases
The research conclusion has been released at the same time as the NHS’s campaign to fight obesity. From June last year, the Government has taken a multitude of measures to combat the rising obesity epidemic. It is currently one of the biggest crisis that the UK is facing, with 63% of people obese or living with obesity.
Using Covid 19 as a ‘wake up call’; the Government is calling for people to lose weight, eat better and be more active.
Led by Public Health England (PHE), the new measures include banning fast food adverts before watershed on TV. There are currently debates on whether all online adverts for high fat, sugar or salt foods should be banned entirely. Various studies have shown that adverts for HFSS foods make up almost 50% of adverts, influencing young children. Buy one get one free offers on unhealthy food will also be removed.
A new rule will see restaurants and cafes show the calories in each of their meals and alcohols. This will give people the chance to calorie count more easily when they go out. This is due to research showing the rise in eating out with families. When eating out, people eat around 200 extra calories unknowingly compared to eating at home.
Health and social care secretary Matt Hancock has shown his support. He confirmed that he is aware misinformation has caused problems. “It is only fair you are given the right information about the food you are eating to help make good decisions”
