Covid event trial coming to the Brit Awards

The Brit Awards 2021 are going ahead this year as part of a Covid event trial. Jack Whitehall will take to the stage in front of a 4,000 strong audience who will not be masked or socially distanced. All will be required to prove a negative Covid test before entering.

Jack Whitehall is to host the Brit Awards in front of 4,000 people

The Brit Awards will be part of an ongoing trial by the Events Research Programme. The Brit Awards is not the only event, a nightclub in Liverpool will be able to open for two nights with 3,000 attendees and a 5,000 person gig has been authorised to go ahead on the 2nd May. The three different events are a test to see how, and if, venues and events can safely go ahead without a spike in Covid positives.

The FA Cup Final is also part of the trial. 21,000 football fans will fill the stadium on the 15th May, just four days after the Brit awards.

The trial has received mixed results from people. Twitter users voiced their outrage that 4,000 people can attend the awards but weddings and funerals have a limit. The Music Venue Trust are happy that live events are going ahead, but question the usefulness of the results.

How will the Brit Awards go ahead?

Although a large number in a post pandemic world, the audience will actually be smaller than previous years. The o2 has the capacity to hold close to 20,000, yet only 4,000 will be attending.

Most tickets will go to Key Workers who live in Central London and have worked through the pandemic. The Brit Awards opened applications for 2,500 tickets on Thursday. They will sit on floor one of the arena, with the ground floor for artists and top floors closed off.

Everyone attendee will have to prove they have a negative result on a lateral flow test. If they can not prove a negative test, they will be turned away at the door. All audience members will also have to give their details for Track and Trace purposes.

Once safety measures have been adhered to, the keyworkers can enter. Inside, the Brits are trying to make it as normal as possible. They will not wear masks or socially distance, with food and drink delivered to tables. After the event, they will be need take a further lateral test. This is to see gather data on the safety of a live venue. Any positive test results will result in the attendees self isolating further.
