First people arrive from India to quarantine in UK

British and Irish Nationals, along with people who hold residency rights, have entered the UK to quarantine. They must quarantine in approved accommodation for at least 10 days after rules changed over night.

As of 4am Friday Morning, anyone who has been to India in the last 10 years will be banned from the UK. Those who do have residency, and nationals, can enter the country at their own cost. They must stay in a hotel for ten days, taking a test on the second and eighth day to be safe. The day of arrival does not count as day one, it is day 0.

India was added to the UK’s red list after a second deadly wave has ravaged the country. Every day sees numbers of death and infections rising steeply. On Friday, India recorded over 300,000 new cases whilst the death rate went up by 2,263 in just 24 hours.

The surge in cases is crippling their medical services. Two of the hospitals have announced they are running out of oxygen and beds, with patients left dying in the street. In Mumbai, thirteen patients have died after a fire broke out in an Intensive Care Unit of a hospital that was set up.

Quarantine worth it for desperate Nanyan

Nanyan Gangyan faces a ten down isolation as he comes home from Chandigarh. He travelled a few weeks ago as both parents contracted the virus. Hearing his mothers desperation on the phone at his fathers condition, he made the decision to travel.

On arrival, he saw how desperate the situation was. The Government and healthcare are completely over run and unable to see a way out without help. Nanyan got his father into a hospital, the same hospital where he underwent a transplant last year, and he is doing recovering.

Getting just three days notice, his wife Vani has said it has been incredibly stressful situation. They are making it as ‘ok’ as they can, although Vani is nervous that he has already been through one ordeal and now needs to go through another.

Nunyan is just one of thousands trying to return home, escaping India. Airports quickly became overwhelmed with the demand. Suresh Kumar, chairman of specialist travel, said many were disappointed as they thought the Government would set up provisions. That they would help them get home and out of the danger zone.

Quarantine to get into the UK – India in Covid Crisis

India’s dire situation is headline news globally, with haunting images of the dead or dying filling news screens. The new variants – B.1.167, E494Q and L452R – have been noted since October but are now out of control.

International efforts have begun to help the country desperately in need. Different EU members are sending aid, whilst the UK has sent ventilators and devices to concentrate oxygen. They have a plan in place for more than 500 oxygen generation plants across the country to help supplies further.

The first aid of consignment left the UK Sunday and will arrive in India by Tuesday. This is the first of numerous shipments, the second of which will leave later this week.

This consignment includes 20 manual ventilators, 120 non invasive ventilators and 495 revolutionary concentrators that can extract the oxygen from the air if the hospital system runs out.

The White House has said it will immediately send the raw materials for the vaccine to manufacturers in India. They have come under criticism for not sending excess vaccines they have available. The US have millions of AztraZenica vaccine, which has not been approved for use in America, available. Dr Anthony Fauci, an American immunologist, has reported that the sending of vaccines is being considered.

Blocking bad news

Following the news that more variants have been found in the high infection cases. This resulted in growing criticism against Prime Minister Modi’s handling of the situation. Many accused him of simply not being ready for the second wave.

In response to this criticism, Modi and his Government blocked dozens of tweets from being seen in India. The Government confirmed this, saying it was blocking those too critical over the Governments handling, stating they were full of misinformation and thus were against the law.
