University students to take mandatory sexual consent tests

A survey by the Higher Education Policy Institute shows that 58% of returning University students approved of ‘consent tests’ to ensure they fully understood sexual consent.

University students have agreed with the idea of mandatory sexual consent tests before returning

The majority of students believe that these should not be optional, but rather mandatory to all. This follows a warning to universities about sexual harassment on campus. Think tank, The Everyone’s Invited, invited students to share accounts of harassment, abuse and sexual assaults.

Surveying a thousand students, only a quarter feel they have been adequately educated. The results show they felt uneducated on the true nature of consent, that the sexual education they received didn’t give them a comprehensive understanding. The main source of confusion surrounds consent when under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The poll showed that one in three students learn more about sex from watching pornography than their education. Helen Marshall, Chief Executive of Brook, says the results show that much more help and support should be offered to students who are away from home for the first time.

University students not as ‘wild’ as portrayed

Universities and their students are commonly portrayed as ‘wild’. Drinking, sexual experimentation and drug abuse are common practice. However, the survey shows that these preconception’s are far from accurate. In fact, the survey in 2020, showed that 43% of students had not had sex before going to university. 25% have never intimately kissed someone, suggesting the old stereotypes need to be reassessed.

The results of the survey proves that students are looking more for friendship than a relationship when first entering the campus. 58% deemed a friendship as the most important thing, 66% of students hadn’t had sex during their time as a student and 11% admitted to abstaining by choice.

The head of the institute, Nick Hillman, is hoping that the information will help students navigating a key point in their life. He continues that the sharing of knowledge and experience could prove invaluable for their peers. That it will help them to make better, informed, decisions.
