Fans of George R R Martin’s Game of Thrones are happy as filming has begun on the prequel. Filming of House of Dragons is ongoing in Cornwall.
Matt Smith, famous for his roles in Doctor Who and The Crown, is seen with the iconic blonde hair of Prince Daemon Targaryen. He, along with actress Emma D’Arcy, were filming at Holywell Bay near Newquay. The series, set in the world of Martin’s novel Fire and Blood, is based 300 years before Game of Thrones. It tells the story of the Targaryen family, whose bloodline ended with the death of Queen Daenerys in GoT.
House of Dragon’s has a release date of 2022, episodes will be available weekly on HBO in the US. HBO marked the special occasion with a picture of a table read. Actors, including Olivia Cooke and Steve Toussaint, sat at a safe distance from each other during the read.
It is believed that film crews and sets from a Medieval like era, were being made in St Michaels Mount, Penzance. St Michaels mount has a historic castle and garden already, an element that would fit in seamlessly with Game of Thrones.
Game of Thrones: a global phenomenon
The Game of Thrones series shows the battles of nine different families to control Westeros. Throughout the series viewers followed three main plots: the rise to power of Daenerys and her exiled family, the story of the Nights Watch and the battle for the Iron throne.
The series took the world by storm, even in its seventh season it regularly had 10 million viewers. The battle between the Baratheon’s, Starks and Targaryen’s divided the world. Each episode saw a flurry of Tweets and Facebook posts as fans discussed the latest twists.
The end series of Game of Thrones angered fans around the world. After 8 seasons, 20 million viewers tuned in to The Iron Throne, almost 16% of the US’s entire population. The ending angered fans across the world, so much so all discussion surrounding the series ground to a halt. In the two years since Game of Thrones ended, all discussion following the series ended with ‘brilliant show, terrible end’
House of Dragons is only the beginning for HBO, they have further series in the works and plans for a West End Show.
