The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended following an increase in cases of coronavirus among players.
A player for Sunrisers Hyderabad tested positive before their match on Tuesday against the Mumbai Indians.
Monday’s match against Royal Challengers Bangalore was also postponed after two Kolkata Knight Riders players tested positive for the virus.
The match on Wednesday between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals was already called off. This was because Chennai bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji tested positive.
Following an emergency meeting, the IPL say it has “unanimously decided” to postpone the season.
The decision was made with the safety, health and wellbeing of all participants in mind. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not want to compromise on the safety of players, support staff and others involved.
The whole world is facing a tough time at the moment, but it is particularly difficult tin India right now. They tried to bring some positivity and cheer, however, it is important now to suspend the tournament.
Everyone should go back to their families and loved ones. The BCCI will do everything in its powers to arrange secure and safe passage of all the participants.
The richest franchise in cricket
The IPL is the richest franchise tournament in world cricket. It has eight franchises representing different Indian cities. It is a Twenty20 tournament with matches of 20 overs per side.
The tournament features global cricketing superstars, including India icon Virat Kohli, and fourteen England players.
Over the weekend, India recorded its highest number of daily Covid deaths since the pandemic began. So far, the country has reported over 222,000 deaths from the virus, and recorded more than 200 million cases.
The IPL was to take place in six venues across India, with players travelling on charter and private flights.
In the various cities, teams are staying within secure areas of hotels and resorts. They do not have any contact with anyone outside the bubble.
