The UK is seeing Covid hotspots popping up in some areas, which means we can’t rule out the return of local lockdowns.
Environment Secretary George Eustice says the government are aware of spikes in infection rates in parts of the UK. There are 28 in England, four in Scotland and two in Northern Ireland.
He admits that they do not know for sure what is causing it. It could be down to the growing presence of particular variants, the easing of restrictions, or a combination of both.
The government are monitoring the situation closely. And they urge people to follow all guidelines and Covid measures, and to not be too lax about restrictions that are in place. It is also advised that people continue to get their jabs as soon as they are eligible for vaccination.
Nothing can be ruled out
Everybody had hoped that the current lockdown would be the last, but nothing can be ruled out. The government are keen to avoid going back into a tiered system. However, they recognise that restrictions could be imposed where it is necessary to do so. This means there is the possibility of localised restrictions and local lockdowns in areas that are high risk Covid hotspots.
At the moment he UK is seeing more cases of the India Covid variant in particular, which was recently added to the list as a “variant of concern”. The government are keen to stop the spread of this strain of virus, and will do whatever it takes to keep it under control. They want to avoid a national crisis at a time when things are improving.
We need to keep moving forward and keep up hope.
