Israel attacked by Palestinian rockets in retaliation

Rockets fell in Israel last night as Palestinian militants retaliate following the death of two top commanders. Over 60 people in Gaza, and seven people in Israel, are dead in the ongoing dispute.

The bombing is the latest in an ongoing escalating situation. Fighting began to worsen on Monday after weeks of growing tension between Israel and Palestinian tension over East Jerusalem. Both countries believe that Jerusalem is their capital.

The escalation has resulted in fighting in the street between Jews and the Israeli Abs. The fighting has left 67 people dead in Gaza, with more bodies in Israel. The violence is coming from both sides; with a Jewish man in Acre attacked by an Arab man and a Jewish mob pulled a Palestinian man out his car and viciously attacked him.

The police have charged over 300 people. In addition to arrests, 37 police officers are also suffering injuries after helping to keep the peace.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called the attacks “anarchy” in a video statement. Urging the fighting to cease, he told both sides that nothing can justify the actions of either side. Militant groups in Gaza, run by Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, started firing rockets on Monday. Israel retaliated by hitting different specific targets in the territory.

At least four hundred people are hurt following the conflicts beginning. This does not include the 67 declared dead. Mr Nethanyahu has pledged to use his Governments strength to protect Israel. The Palestinian Authority condemned the nature of the statement in a tweet, saying it is instilling fear in an “already beleaguered population”

Why are Palestinian – Israel fighting?

The religious holiday of Ramadam, which starts on April 12th and continues for a month, saw Israel put a limit of 10,000 people gathering for their prayers at the Al Aqsa mosque.

Followers believe that the mosque is the third most holy site in Islam. Known as Temple Mount, it is the site where the Jewish first and second Temples are built. The sites renowned reputation saw tens of thousands of Muslims turned away. One of the reasons cited for the refusal, is the ongoing supreme court case.

There is mounting tension following the effect of eviction of Palestinian families. Jewish settler groups are going to the Israeli Supreme court in their fight for the claim to the land.

The fight is showing no signs of stopping. Gaza militants have admitted to firing 130 rockets into Israel. This attack, which was a retaliation for the Israeli Air Raid that left the al-Sharouk tower in ruins. The tower, which is the the third building destroyed in the escalation, housed Al-Aqsa TV. The TV station which Hamas owns.

Sirens sounded out across Israel, resulting in millions of Israelis in bomb shelters on Wednesday evening. Defence and security correspondent for the Jerusalem Post, Anna Ahronheim described her night in the shelter as “horrifying”. Six year old Ido Avigal in the airstrike.

A world calling for calm


US President Joe Biden has been in contact with Mr Netanyahu to help. Offering support for Israeli security, he told Netanyahu ultimately the country needs to reach ‘sustainable calm’.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is sending a diplomatic messenger to meet with both sides. Russia has called for an urgent meeting between the US, UN and Russia as the world unites to end the war.
