A new variant of Covid 19, named the Indian Variant, is spreading throughout the UK. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he wants the UK to ‘grip it’ but is “ruling nothing out” in beating another wave.
Meetings are underway today to discuss what measures Government will take now to beat the new Covid 19 strain. Boris told Sky News he will ensure all the necessary steps and preventions are taken now.
New figures, shared by Public Health England, are allegedly going to show a huge rise in the number of variant cases. SAGE will host a meeting on Thursday to discuss the variant’s spread and how to keep it under control.
A spokesman for the Prime Minster has said there are “no plans” to introduce a new lockdown. Nor will they go back to the tier system of restrictions. The European Medicine Agency are confident that the current vaccine will protect against the new strain. The Government are “ruling nothing out” as as rumours of surge testing and vaccination surge.
The Prime Minister says he can see nothing to dissuade him from going ahead with the easing of restrictions on Monday or June 21st.
Covid 19 lockdown easing to go ahead
Currently, the UK are due to see the next set of restrictions easing from Monday 17th May. This new easing, named Stage 3, come into affect.
The new rules allow restaurants and pubs to serve customers indoors. The rule of six still is applicable meaning two households, or up to six adults, can share a meal. Adults can now pick whether they socially distance with friends and family, as hugging is no longer restricted.
Boris Johnson says data is currently being collected, meaning the future of mask wearing is still unclear. More announcements are due at the end of month. The Prime Minister says he is “cautiously optimistic” that we can move things back to normality.
