Royal Life a mix of “The Truman Show and being in a Zoo”

Prince Harry says he wants to “break the cycle” of “pain and suffering” when raising his children. He compares his upbringing and royal life as a “mixture between The Truman Show and being in a zoo”.

Royal Life - Buckingham Palace London

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior royals at the beginning of last year. Together they already have a two year old son, Archie, and Meghan is currently pregnant with their daughter. He does not want to pass on pain from his own experience to them.

Speaking on a podcast, the prince says he does not wan to point the finger of blame at anybody. He recognises that he may have experienced pain from his parents own suffering. But wants to make sure that he doesn’t pass any of his pain and suffering from his own experiences on to his children. As a parent, he has a responsibility to his children, and hopes to break the cycle. He wants to do his best to make sure that anything that may have happened to him, doesn’t happen to his children as well.

Prince Harry was not aware at the time of growing up, but sees it now. He realises that his father’s upbringing had an influence on his own. His father treated him in the same way that he himself was treated by his parents. However, the duke is keen to change that for his own children. The problem is that you are born into it, and inherit everything that come with it, without choice.

Pressures of Royal Life

Growing up as a member of the Royal Family means being constantly in the public eye. This put a lot of pressures on him as child, as he was under such scrutiny. Living in the spotlight is likened to the 1998 Jim Carrey film The Truman Show, about a man who is unaware that his entire life is actually a TV show.

Moving his family to America was not part of the plan, but Harry says “sometimes you’ve got to make decisions and put your family first and put your mental health first”. Living in Los Angeles is a different experience for him and his wife. They feel more free and able to do things they would otherwise not be allowed. For example, he says he can take Archie on the back of his bicycle, something he would never have had the chance to do.

The couple would not be able to live unnoticed in the UK. Even if he tried to hide, everyone would recognise the prince if they saw him walking down the street.
