Trump enquiry turns criminal, says NY prosecutor

The Trump Organisation, a property company owned by Donald Trump, is under investigation in a ‘criminal capacity’.

The investigation into the Trump Organisation has changed from civil to criminal.

The New York attorney general’s office is continuing the enquiry in a “criminal capacity”. New York’s top senator Letitia James has been meticulously going through former Presidents financial dealings. The nature of these dealings was prior to his election as a Republican President.

Civil cases typically has a particular target, causing injury to individuals or businesses. Whereas the damage in Criminal cases is on a larger scale. It affects society at large, things like an entire state.

No details have been released surrounding why the case is now criminal. Nor if Trump personally is being investigated. The Trumps refute the investigation and deny any wrongdoing. They believe the investigation is part of a political vendetta.

A spokesman for Ms James’s, Fabien Levy, has informed the Trumps of the new direction. They have no further comment. It is known that they are working with the Manhattan DA.

Why is the Trump organisation under investigation?

The investigation into the Trump Organisation began on March 2019. Letitia began looking into ongoing claims surround the Trump Organisation inflating the value of his assets when seeking bank loans. The organisation the understates their assets when trying to lower taxes.

The investigation began in New York but has since spread to Chicago, Los Angeles, Manhattan and upstate New York. Whilst President, Donald Trump called the investigation a “witch hunt”, by Democrats trying to force him out of office.

Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance Jr has been investigating alleged “protracted criminal conduct” at the Trump Organisation since last August. As part of the investigation, the DA is looking into the manipulation of financial records. Allegedly Trump used “hush money” to pay two women who claim to have slept with in 2016. He then changed the records to cover it.

During his presidency, Trump refused to reveal his tax returns despite mounting pressure. Mr Vance’s office says Mr Trumps office finally gave over his tax returns in February. When the ex president left office, he lost his Presidential privileges. These privileges include protection from prosecution.
