Annie Mac Leaving Radio One After 17 Years

Long time DJ Annie Mac announced she is leaving BBC Radio 1, after 17 years at the station.

She posted the news on Instagram, stating her reasons for leaving. She wants to have more time to spend with her kids in the evenings, as well as write fiction and create podcasts. Annie loves the idea of leaving the party when she’s still having the most fun she can.

Her last Future Sounds show will be broadcast on 30 July, before Clara Amfo takes over as host. Clara is looking forward to her new role, describing it as “extra special” for her. She is a huge fan of the show, the artists, and has a lot of love and respect for Annie.

Annie has received huge amounts of praise from thousands of listeners, who credit her with helping them though the coronavirus pandemic. She has also helped many artists throughout her years of broadcasting. AJ Tracey, Arlo Parks and Jax Jones are among those thanking her for her support.

Radio 1 boss Aled Haydn Jones describes Annie Mac as “quite simply a legend”.

He adds that Clara will make the perfect replacement as she is currently one of the most influential voices in the music industry. She has an incredible affinity for discovering new music, making her ideal as the face of it for Radio 1. Aled is confident that listeners will love what she brings to the show.

A new lineup

Clara’s current daytime slot, including the Live Lounge, is to be taken over by Ricky, Melvin and Charlie. The trio describe the opportunity as “an absolute dream” to present a show they all adore and have so much love, passion and respect for.

In a further shake up to the lineup, Radio 1’s Future Artists with Jack Saunders will move to 8pm on Monday to Wednesday. His Indie Show on Thursdays will also move to the new time slot. He is delighted to be given the earlier slot as he loves presenting on Radio 1. He says, “I live and breathe this show and the music around it”.

The 6pm Friday Dance Party slot will be taken over by Danny Howard. He joined Radio 1 after winning the station’s Superstar DJ talent competition in 2011.

US DJ Diplo, host of Diplo & Friends, also plans to leave the station later this year, in September, after 10 years.

Radio 1 will welcome new presenter Sarah Story to host the Future Dance show on Friday nights. She hosted her first show on New Year’s Day as part of Radio 1’s guest presenter takeover.
