Bafta has decided to suspend actor and director Noel Clarke following allegations of sexual harassment. He had only just received one of its top awards a few weeks ago.
Bafta said in a statement, the decision was “in light of the allegations of serious misconduct”.
The 45 year old star is famous for the Kidulthood film series and TV shows such as Doctor Who. At a ceremony on 10 April he received the outstanding British contribution to cinema prize.
Clarke “vehemently” denies “any sexual misconduct or wrongdoing”, and intends to defend himself against these “false allegations”.
In a career that has spanned 20 years, he has put inclusivity and diversity at the forefront of his work. Throughout this time he has never had a complaint made against him. He apologies if anyone working with him has ever felt uncomfortable or disrespected.
Allegations reportedly come from 20 women, all who knew Clarke in a professional capacity.
Following the claims, Bafta is suspending his membership and recently awarded honour immediately, until further notice. The actor and producer, from London, was first recognised by Bafta when winning the rising star prize in 2009.
