The BAFTA TV AWARDS celebrate the best shows we have seen throughout the year. A year where we have relied heavily on the escapism these shows provide to make it through the year.
Due to Covid restrictions, and safeguarding the celebrities and staff, the BAFTA’s will take place behind closed doors. The usual venue, The London Royal Festival Hall, will not be used this year.
Director Steve McQueen’s British Anthology series, Small Axe, broke records with fifteen nominations. The show focuses on the lives of West Indian Immigrants in five very distinct stories.
Director McQueen confirmed that he made the series primarily for his mother. A Small Axe allows his mother to see stories like her own life reflected back at her. The series focuses on a period of time between the 60’s and 80’s where events were hidden and not talked about. In making the series, McQueen is hoping these contested stories will now be spoken about.
The other series which has swept the BAFTA boards is Netflix’s The Crown, with 10 nominations. The fourth series, released earlier this year, focused on Prince Charles’ marriage to Princess Diana. As well as a nomination for best Drama Series; Actors Josh O’Connor, Helena Bonham Carter, Tobiaz Menzies and Amy Roberts all have individual nominations too. The Crown has won big this year, with three Golden Globe wins at the 78th Golden Globes this year. Actor’s Josh O’Connor and Emma Carrin won for their depiction of Diana and Charles.
The ‘Must See Moment’ Category has shocked voters, with Diversity’s Black Lives Matter routine on the list of nominations. The routine, which Diversity performed on Britain’s Got Talent, spurred thousands of complaints to Ofcom. The routine is up against Chantelle Killing Grey in EastEnders, Luke Skywalker’s cameo in the Mandelorian and Penelope being revealed as Lady Whistledown.
The battle of the Soaps continues with EastEnders battling Casualty, Hollyoaks and Coronation Street. Last years winners Emmerdale have not received a nomination this year.
BAFTA TV Awards – Posthumous awards
This year see’s just one posthumous Bafta TV nomination. Paul Ritter passed away a few weeks ago from a brain tumour. The actor was just 54 when he passed away. Pauls nomination is for Male Performance in a Comedy for his role in Friday Night Dinner. The actor plays beloved father Martin Goodman in the TV show, which focuses on the chaos of Friday night family dinners for the family.
Following the death of Paul, and the conclusion of the sixth series, the producers of Friday night dinner have chosen to not continue the series.
The Harry Potter star is up against other nominees; including Charlie Cooper for This Country, Guz Khan for Man Like Mobeen, Joseph Gilgun for Brassic, Ncuti Gatwa for Sex Education and Reece Shearsmith for Inside Number 9.
