Billie Eilish is apologising for mouthing along to a racist slur in a video that has resurfaced across social media.
A compilation of the video, which has been edited, was posted on TikTok earlier this month. Footage of the singing mouthing along to Fish by Tyler the Creator. Billie mouthed along to the 2011 hit, including the derogatory word “chink”. In addition to this, the footage also features Billie singing using a variety of different accents.
The Grammy Award winning singer took to her Instagram account to apologise for the old video. In her post, she tells fans finds the footage shameful and embarrassing.
Starting her apology with “I love you guys”, Billie explains why she is choosing to address the footage. She explains she is being labeled as something she definitely is not. She describes the heartbreaking feeling that her words are causing pain to her fans.

In her apology, Billie explains she was just 13 or 14 at the time. She was unaware the lyric was a derogatory slur. She does not use her age as an excuse, explaining “nothing excuses the fact it was hurtful”.
Explaining “she wants to barf” every time she hears the song or remembers singing along with it. She explains that, at the time of filming, she was unaware of the word as it is not one her family ever uses.
Furthermore, Billie explains her use of different accents in the post. She explains she has been doing this since childhood. Defining it as “absolute gibberish”, she says it is “in no way an imitation of any language”. She explains that those who know her personally, knows that she continually “goofs around with voices”.
In the Instagram post and story, Billie says the current allegations break her heart. That she has always, and will continue to, protect her fans. She works hard on her platform to “fight for inclusion, kindness, tolerance, equity and equality.”
Of course, Billie uses her apology to urge fans to “continue having conversations, to listen and learn”. Reminding fans she loves them in her conclusion, Billie thanks fans for taking the time to read her apology.
