Political party Taking the Initiative say one of their members is in a critical condition after a shooting. Prominent Black Lives Matter (BLM) activist Sasha Johnson is in intensive care following a shot to the head in the early ours of Sunday morning.
The incident occurred at around 3:00 am in Southwark, south London. The Metropolitan Police report an attack on a 27 year old woman at a gathering in Consort Road in Peckham. However, they have not confirmed her identity, but say her family are informed. The woman is now receiving treatment in south London hospital for life-threatening injuries.
There is currently no evidence suggesting the shooting was targeted, or that the woman previously received any serious threats.
The police are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry, at the scene and surrounding area, and are also appealing for witnesses. Officers believe there were a number of people in the area at the time who may have seen something. This is because the shooting took place out on the street near a house where a party was happening.
It is a shocking incident, leaving a young woman with very serious injuries. Her family are now going through a difficult time, and receiving plenty of support. It is crucial that people who may know something come forward. Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area that morning, or has any helpful information, should get in touch as soon as possible.
Showing solidarity
Ms Johnson is a member of the Taking the Initiative Party’s leadership committee, and a leading figure in the BLM movement in the UK. The Oxford Brookes University graduate, and mother of two, is a “powerful voice” always fighting for black people and the injustices surrounding their community.
Her party spoke out on Instagram, calling for everyone to get together and pray for Sasha and her recovery. They hope everyone will show support for her family and loved ones.
Meanwhile, Black Lives Matters UK is shocked by the shooting of “a young mother and fearless political campaigner who was at the forefront of many protests”.
Labour MP Claudia Webbe also joined in, tweeting about problems of “too many guns and violent weapons damaging too many lives”. She believes “all women should be safe on our streets”.
