Jamie Spears, the father of singer Britney Spears, is in agreement to relinquish his role as his daughter’s conservator. He pledges to take part in an “orderly transition” to a new legal arrangement.
However, Mr Spears’ lawyer insists there are “no actual grounds” for him to step down, and has not yet given any timetable on when it will happen.
The pop star’s lawyer calls the latest development “a major victory for Britney Spears and another step toward justice”.
Since 2008, the music artist’s career was in the hands of legal guardians. The conservatorship is split into two parts, one for her estate and financial affairs, and one for her as a person. In July, she filed a petition against her father to stop him controlling her estate, adding that she will not perform again while he stays in that position.
Court papers filed on Thursday responding to the singer’s petition, say Miss Spears’ father is “in a position to step aside” as long as certain matters are resolved. His lawyer says that Jamie Spears is “the unremitting target of unjustified attacks” and does not think “a public battle with his daughter… would be in her best interests”.
Meanwhile, Britney’s lawyer Mathew Rosengart welcomed the move, calling it a “vindication” for his client. However, he accuses Mr Spears of “shameful and reprehensible attacks”, saying he should stop “making false accusations and taking cheap shots”.

Mr Rosengart says an investigation will continue into the actions of people involved in managing Britney’s estate throughout the conservatorship.
Concerns were raised in 2008 over the singer’s mental health, leading to the court-ordered agreement. This gave Jamie Spears control over his daughter’s estate and other aspects of her life, including her career. In recent months she has fought back to remove him from the role, calling for him to face charges of “conservatorship abuse”.
The ongoing legal row attracted new attention in 2021 after documentary Framing Britney Spears aired on television. The show focused on the conflict over the singer’s guardianship. The 39 year old star later told a judge about times she was drugged and forced to perform against her will. She also claimed her father prevented her from having more children.
Mr Spears repeatedly denies any accusations of doing anything wrong, expressing concern for his daughter’s wellbeing. He stepped back from his role as Britney’s personal conservator in 2019 for health reasons. But he continues to oversee her business affairs.
Fans have set up their own movement, the #FreeBritney campaign, to help the singer in her fight. They want Britney Spears to regain complete control over all of her affairs.
