Britney Spears has formally requested to speak to the judge directly about her conservatorship case.
The judge approved Britney’s request to bring the case forward, and a court date has been set for June 23rd. Currently the singers father, Jamie Spears, has control over her conservatorship. Jamie gained control when conservatorship was granted in 2008, after the star was hospitalised following concern surrounding the state of her mental health.
In 2019, Jamie stepped down as conservator of her personal affairs, but remains in control of her financial affairs. Jodi Montgomery has replaced him temporarily, although Britney wants this to be permanent.
Britney has continually protested the power her father has over her conservatorship. There are two different types of conservatorship. One for Britney’s personal affairs and the other for her estate and financial affairs. The details are not public knowledge. Conservatorships are given only if a person is unable to make their own decisions.
Britney Spears – a star in the spotlight for the wrong reasons
Framing Britney Spears, released on 5th February 2021, revolves around the career of Britney, from the beginnings through to her shocking fall. The section of the documentary that focuses on the conservatorship battle sparked a movement known as #FreeBritney. This movement has actively been protesting her Conservatorship whilst trying to help her gain control of her own life.
The documentary solicited the hashtag #wearesorryBritney. The tag featured a variety of celebrities and personalities apologising for any backlash she received for comments or interview questions. These apologies were not singularly television, but print instead. Cosmopolitan magazine posted on Instagram, apologising for helping fun her downfall.
Britney herself does not appear on the documentary. A note at the end of the documentary does clarify they were unsure if their request to appear ever actually made it to Britney or not. The star revealed that she “cried for two weeks” over the high profile documentary. In an Instagram post, the star said she had not watched the documentary in its entirety. She continued saying it had painted the star in a bad light and left her embarrassed.
#FreeBritney case ongoing
In February, Mr Spears went to court to get more control over Britney’s financials. The Judge ruled he must share control with private trust Bessemer Trust. This makes both Mr Spears and the trust equally in control of the stars financials.
Babs Gray, host of BritneyGram podcast, said the public encouragement helps. The #FreeBritney movement has exploded since the release of the documentary. Bab’s hope this support is not a flash in the pan, and it continues throughout Britney’s journey. Britney refuses to perform live. The singer has not performed in over two years. She will not perform live until Jamie’s conservatorship is revoked.
