The Queen is opening the gardens of Buckingham Palace this summer, in an unprecedented move. The Royal Collection Trust (RCT) made the announcement. This is positive news to those disappointed by the cancellation of the opening of the states rooms.
Instead the palace is offering self guiden garden tours from July to September. These tours will give people an opportunity to walk through the private site.
Visitors can eat on the grounds and are encouraged to bring their own picnic chairs, blanket and food. This will allow visitors to enjoy the view of the sweeping lawns. Alcohol, barbeques and ball games will not be allowed on the grounds.
The RCT announced that guests would be free to explore a route in there own time. The route will take visitors to the ground through the 156 herbaceous border, plane trees that were planted by their Royal Highnesses Queen Victoria and husband Prince Albert, finishing with beautiful views of the island.
There will be guided tours of the south west of the garden; with the rose garden, summer house and a meadow of wild flowers included. These tours will run each day.
A little Buckingham Palace history
Despite being in the heart of London, the 39 acre garden dates all the way back to the 1820’s. This is when George IV turned Buckingham House into a palace. It is now home to a variety of plants, flowers and animal life, including native plants rarely seen in the urban city.
Buckingham Palace opened in 1933 and it has opened every year since during the months of April and September. The re-opening of 2021 will be the first time Buckingham Palace has opened since the pandemic.
