The Events and Research Programme (ERP) has seen test audiences attend festivals across the UK. These events see thousands of people coming together without the need for social distancing and masks. To attend the events; like Download, FA Cup and the Brit Awards, the only requirement is a negative Covid test.

Event organisers are expecting the findings to be made available to the public next week. This is to help event organisers to start to plan for the summer events. However, the Government is delaying the publication of the findings without explanation.

Live event industries stated in the legal document says the four week delay in reopening event venues is unfair to the industry. They estimate that they cancelling of 5, 000 gigs across the UK will cause up to hundreds of million pounds of loss.

Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cameron Mackintosh and Sonia Friedman have formed a group to launch the legal action. This legal action not only calls for the publication of the research results, but also an insurance fund to cover live events. This scheme would allow venues to get their money back, should an event be cancelled this summer.

Action by Andrew Lloyd-Webber overdue after calls for help

The action taken by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and other west end officials is at the end of a long year of problems. The live entertainment industry has been calling for help since he pandemic first began.

Government spokesperson Mr Huddleston agrees, saying the Government are “aware of wider concerns about the industry”.

Sir Lloyd-Webber was initially invited to single out his Cinderella production as part of the Government’s pilot scheme. He turned down the opportunity before launching the legal case. Speaking to the press, Lloyd-Webber says “The Governments Action is forcing theatre off of a cliff. The situation is beyond urgent”.

Cameron Mackintosh seconds this information. He says that the theatres desperately need to be supported in its hour of need.” He accuses the Government of breaking the countries most priceless asset.
