The family of Captain Sir Tom Moore are encouraging people to take part in a fundraiser on what would have been his birthday weekend.
The Army veteran is well remembered as an inspiration to us all after raising nearly £33m for NHS charities. He achieved this by walking 100 laps of his Bedfordshire garden before turning 100. These fundraising efforts captured the hearts of the nation, and will not be forgotten.
Sadly, on 2 February this year, he passed away at Bedford Hospital after contracting Coronavirus.
Anyone wishing to get involved is required to set themselves a challenge revolving around the number 100.
The challenges will take place on the bank holiday weekend of 30 April-3 May, which coincides with the date that would have been Captain Sir Tom Moore’s 101st birthday.
His daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore asked that people partake in their own challenge to raise money. This could be either for the Captain Tom Foundation or a charity of their own choosing.
Although the family are still grieving, Ms Ingram-Moore says they are pushed forward by hope. She hopes that people see this challenge as a chance to bring joy, give to charity, and support the Captain Tom Foundation. In her view, the Foundation is “the legacy of hope that he’s left us.”
The 100 Challenge
She said the family had talked with Captain Sir Tom about ideas for things they could do for his next birthday. He fully backed this planned event to celebrate his 101st birthday. There is no doubt that he would have been there and taken part too.
The family will be taking part by continuing Captain Sir Tom’s walk as they feel it is the right thing to do. They are still working out the finer details, but propose to walk 100 laps a day.
The number 100 was a very significant number to her father, and he was so proud to be 100 years old.
It was considered whether the challenge should be 101, but decided it had to be 100 because she is certain that was the best year of his life.
Suggestions for challenges include walking 100 steps, baking 100 cakes, scoring 100 goals, or writing a 100 word poem. But the family want people to go crazy and create their own challenge.
The 100 challenge is the perfect way to celebrate the hope and joy Captain Sir Tom inspired in so many. The family believe he would have loved the idea of everybody being able to get involved.
Now is your chance to take part and help keep his legacy of hope alive.
