Friends and family came together to celebrate as Covid 19 UK Lockdown eases further.
It has been 97 days since people have been able to go to the pub for a drink, or meal, with family and friends. The hospitality industry shut January 5th for England, with those in Tier 4 waiting even longer. Despite freezing temperatures, and flurries of snow across the country, people celebrated the next step towards normality.
A woman who has lived in Soho for 15 years said “its lovely just to see people out to have life around us, I’ve missed it so much”. Another participant in Liverpool said it was “worth it” to brave the cold for a pint in the pub.
Supermarket giant Tesco used their advertising space to encourage people to “pop to your local if you can”. They added that “pubs have had it tough this year. That’s why, for once, instead of telling you about our fantastic deals. We’re using this space to ask you to support them instead. Because right now, every little helps”
Queues were forming outside hairdressers before they opened, people desperate to get their hair cut after over three months in lockdown. Primark saw people entering the shops with suitcases, indulging in retail therapy that has been sorely missed.
Business owners and workers joined in the celebration. Jeremy Joseph, owner of G-A-Y in Soho stated he had lost 1.3 million in the pandemic and that he is working at only 10%. “Outside hospitality is not going to cover it. It is not making money, it is just reducing our losses”
A word of warning as Covid 19 Lockdown eases.
Earlier on Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson advised people to “continue to behave responsibly” as Covid 19 UK Lockdown restrictions eased. Numbers continue to drop, partly in due to the vaccine rollout but also because of lockdown.
Professor Lawrence Young, a virologist and medical oncologist, said it was “important to remain cautious, even on a joyous day. We can’t ignore what is happening in the rest of the world. Every other day new variants are being reported and infection is rife”
