TV medic Dr Christian is asking for help paying a £125,000 court fine after losing his libel case with Northern Ireland Minister Arlene Foster.
The celebrity doctor set up a GoFundMe page to help achieve the costs after falsely accusing the DUP minister of having an affair. A judge ruled that the tweets against Mrs Foster were “grossly defamatory”, causing her “upset, embarrassment and harassment”
The TV personality set up a GoFundMe page, entitled “Support Dr Christian”. On his page, he explains how he gave evidence to the court surrounding his mental health and personal circumstances. The judge, however, still wants Dr Christian to pay libel damages and full indemnity legal costs incurred by Mrs Foster during the proceedings.
Dr Jesson is planning on appealing the sentence, which he believes to be unfair. At the time of the Tweet, he allegedly was living with his parents following a bad period surrounding his mental health. Mr Justice McAlinden says there is “no medical evidence to substantiate this”
What did Dr Christian actually do?
On December 23rd 2019, Dr Christian tweeted a derogatory comment to his 30,000 followers. The tweet references rumours surrounding Arlene Foster’s alleged affair, before saying “it always comes back to bite them in the a**e”.
When Arlene’s lawyer asked Christian to delete the tweet, he replied LOL. He then purposelyleft the tweet for a further two weeks.
Mrs Fosters lawyers says the claims “hurt her to her core” with the full tweet painting her as an adulterer, homophobe and hypocrite. The ex DUP leader has been outspoken about her beliefs surrounding the “traditional” marriage between a man and woman. She insists, though, she is not a homophobe.
Dr Jesson, 44, claims he only has £20,000 to his name. Launching the GoFundME page is an attempt for the tv star to avoid bankruptcy. His target is set at £150,000 with any surplus going to charity. He says the continued stress is affecting his mental health,as he can “feel it cracking.”
At the time of writing this, the page has raised just over £7,000.
