Duchess of Cambridge self-isolating after close Covid contact

The Duchess of Cambridge is forced into self-isolating for a period of 10 days following contact with someone testing positive for Covid.

She was supposed to spend today with her husband marking the 73rd anniversary of the NHS. They planned to attend a thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral before hosting a charity tea for NHS staff at Buckingham Palace.

The duchess, who has received both her jabs, came into contact with someone last week who has since tested positive for Covid. She is not experiencing any symptoms herself, but is “following all relevant government guidelines”. On Friday, she started self-isolating after receiving an alert that afternoon.

Testing regime

The last public event attended by the royal was a visit to Wimbledon on Friday. While there she had a tour of the venue and met with staff in the Centre Court kitchen and museum. She sat in the Royal Box of Centre Court with the Duke of Kent. She also watched Jamie Murray play a doubles match on court 14, alongside former British number one Tim Henman.

The duchess is fan of the sport, and a patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, but will now probably miss both the men’s and women’s final games at the weekend.

The royal household follows a strict testing regime, taking two lateral flow tests a week. In addition, the duchess took tests prior to visiting Wimbledon and Wembley on Tuesday for England’s Euro 2020 win over Germany. Both tests received negative results.

Last spring, Prince William caught coronavirus, but could still carry on with engagements by telephone and online. His father, the Prince of Wales, also contracted the virus around the same time, but only suffered mild symptoms.
