Duke of Edinburgh has died aged 99

The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Phillip, has died. An announcement by Buckingham Palace said he passed away this morning at his home in Windsor Palace.

In an official announcement, the palace stated “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Speaking at a press conference, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he “helped to steer the Royal Family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life”

Prince Phillip, one of the last surviving soldiers to serve in World War II, is also the longest serving consort in British History. “From that conflict he took an ethic of service that he applied throughout the unprecedented change of the post-War era.” the Prime Minister added.

Born on the Greek Island of Corfu June 10th 1921, Prince Phillip was the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice. Princess Alice was the daughter of Prince Louis of Battenburg, and a Great Grandaughter of Queen Victoria

Her Royal Majesty and Duke of Edinburgh married in 1947, five years before she became Queen. When she became Queen, he became Royal Consort and served for 68 years. The longest any consort has served. They were married for 73 years.

The Queen and Prince Philip have four children, eight Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren. Prince Charles was born in 1948, Princess Anne in 1950, Prince Andrew in 1960 and Prince Edward in 1964.
