The Met Office issue an extreme heat weather warning as parts of the UK could reach a baking 33C (91.4F). This is hotter than some top European holiday destinations, including Tenerife and Marbella.
The new-style amber weather warning informed people to look out for signs of sunburn and heat exhaustion. It covers large areas of Wales, the whole of the south-west region of England and parts of southern and central England. The warning will remain in place until Thursday, when peak temperatures are predicted.
A heat-health alert is also issued by Public Health England, advising people to stay out of the sun between 11:00 BST and 15:00 BST, when it is at its hottest. In addition, they advise to drink plenty of fluids, avoiding excess alcohol and physical exertion.
Increased risks
The Met Office warn many people are at potential risk of sunburn, heat exhaustion, dehydration, fatigue and nausea over the next few days. And those who are most vulnerable could suffer with more adverse adverse health effects. As temperatures rise, some heat-sensitive systems and equipment may fail, resulting in power cuts. People may also suffer in long delays if there is disruption to road, rail and air travel.
People can expect a restless night’s sleep, as he high temperatures are due to last throughout the whole day and into the night.
Meanwhile, a warning is also in place for an “increased risk of water safety incidents”. This is because more people are expected to visit the coast, rivers and lakes. Open water poses dangers that are not always visible, leading to six people drowning in England over the weekend.
England recorded a record-breaking number of heatwave related deaths last summer, prompting the new warning. The Met Office’s new extreme heat warning launched at the beginning of June 2021, highlighting the potential for widespread disruption and adverse health effects. It is currently at an amber level, which is the second highest position in the system.
Heatwaves are becoming more common in the UK as human induced climate change results in extreme weather conditions. The world has already seen a 1.2C temperature increase since the industrial era started. It will keep getting warmer unless governments around the globe cut their emissions.
