As UK Covid Cases rise, and the introduction of stricter restrictions in places hardest hit, a new Isolation support system is begins its trial.
This ‘buddy’ system, which is being piloted in nine parts of England this week, provides support to those isolating. Various departments will be working within the trial. Social Care, translation services, alternative accommodation and mental health support are working together.
The Government hopes the new scheme will encourage people to test and isolate if they need to. As the new Indian Variant sees a rise in ‘hot spots’ throughout the UK, Health Secretary Matt Hancock says this trial is vital.
Describing the new Indian variant a ‘Trojan horse’ against the hard work and progress the country has made so far. The new scheme helps show people how easy it is to “follow the rules and self isolate when asked”.
The people who participate in the new trial will not receive any financial support if they need to isolate. The current Test and Trace Support Payment Scheme helps people on low income families if they need to isolate.
Under current rules, they can get a £500 grant. Labour leaders are asking for the Government to expand eligibility to anyone who tests positive.
New trials across UK hope to curb UK Covid cases
Another scheme is already being piloted in Greater Manchester in order to battle UK Covid cases. The Government has given the scheme £2 million of funding to assess the needs of those who self isolate.
The ‘support and engagement teams’ visit the homes of those who are self isolating within 24 hours. They discuss needs with the Covid positive patients before developing a bespoke plan.
A spokesperson for the Local Government Association (LGA) believes the rapid targeting of Covid cases is crucial to tackling UK Covid 19 cases.
James Jamieson is hopeful the new measures will give an insight into what people need when isolating. Using contacts, and buddies, they will protect themselves, families and communities.
Professor Adam Finn, who is a member of a Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, is cautiously excited. Talking to the Radio Times, he describes we are “in a race with the virus.” While he knows the virus is out, and the vaccination programme is making huge progress, it needs “an adjustment of sorts” on June 21st.
