Jon Snow has announced he will be leaving Channel 4 News after 32 years. The 73 year old is one of the UK’s longest serving TV news presenters. He has been the programme’s main anchor since 1989.
Of his decision, he said it was “time to move on” after “three incredible decades”, and is “looking forward to new adventures and new challenges”.
Channel 4 say Snow will remain with them, but will now front “longer-form projects” and represent them in other matters.
Snow is excited by all the things he wants to accomplish, but has enjoyed every minute of his time with the programme. The news show has brought adventure, but most of all community working with a fantastic group of people bound in intellect, humour and understanding. The stories he has reported on have brought both joy and sorrow.
He feels proud to have contributed to Channel 4 News to provide a wonderful service, and be anchor for so long.
‘Fearless journalism’
As well as being a fixture in the London studio, the job has taken him around the world to report on stories. This included the fall of the Berlin Wall, Nelson Mandela’s release and the inauguration of Barack Obama.
The programme has won 10 Bafta TV awards during his time. Snow also received the award for the best factual contribution to television in 2005. And in 2015, he got the Bafta Fellowship, the organisation’s highest accolade. In addition, he has six Royal Television Society journalism awards, including five for presenter of the year.
The Channel 4 News editor describes Snow as “a wonderful man” who has been “the driving force behind Channel 4 News for the last 30 years”.
Meanwhile, Channel 4’s chief content officer says he is “a talismanic figure”.
Fellow news presenter Cathy Newman tweeted that it was “a total privilege to present alongside” him.
Snow’s focus will now be on his charities and passions in life, people’s stories, inequality, Africa, Iran and the arts.
Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Cathy Newman, Matt Frei and Jackie Long are the remaining presenting team on Channel 4 News.
