Kevin Spacey will return to the big screen this summer. He will star in Italian film L’uomo Che Disegno Dio – The Man Who Drew God.
Kevin disappeared from movies three years ago due to various cases of sexual assault and misconduct were filed against him. This will be the debut return for the star, who vehemently denies the charges.
Movie Director Franco Nero has confirmed Spacey’s participation in the film. In an interview, he states he is a “great actor” and he “cannot wait to start the movie”. Reports suggest Kevin Spacey will play a detective investigating the case of a man wrongly accused of a sex crime.
Kevin Spacey has an impressive movie history behind him, winning two Oscars. In recent years he has been accused of multiple sexual misconduct acts. This has seen him shunned from the A list Hollywood circles he once occupied. The ‘cancel culture’ saw him fired from hit Netflix series “House of Cards” despite not being convicted of a crime.
Does Kevin Spacey returning to film signifying a rise in the ‘uncancel culture’?
In an article in the Guardian, journalist Peter Bradshaw questions whether Kevins return to movies signify a rise in “un-cancel culture”.
Cancel culture is the term for when someone is thrown out of social circles. They become “cancelled”. The relatively new term has faced staunch criticism. In a speech, Former President Barack Obama warned against cancel culture as “good people have flaws”. Others have stated that cancel culture is simply cyber bullying dressed up.
Pro ‘cancel culture’ activists argue that it is simply people facing consequences of their crimes.
When the accusations against Kevin were first made, by over 20 different accusers, he instantly lost roles. Sir Ridley Scott recast his character in movie All The Money In the World, at great production expense.
In 2019, an existing case against him was dropped. This case saw him accused of sexually assaulting a young man in a bar. There are ongoing cases against him. The police have confirmed “cases files are with the Crown Prosecution Service” and have been since 2020.
With Civil cases still in the judicial system, but all Criminal cases closed, it looks as if Kevin is making a careful return into the public eye. In addition to his role in this film, Kevin will also be a judge in the InMovieFest festival in late August.
It is yet to be seen if Kevin Spacey’s return will be well received amongst the public.
