A survey suggests over 40% of adults in England gained weight during lockdown, with an average gain of half a stone (just over 3kg).
The findings come from a survey of 5,000 people by Public Health England (PHE). They say the Covid restrictions during the pandemic caused disruption to people’s daily routines. The lockdown brought challenges, making it difficult for people to eat healthily and keep fit. Around half of those who put on weight apportioned the blame to comfort eating and snacking.
In response, PHE now recommends a fitness drive over the summer with its Better Health campaign. This involves offering free guidance and support and a 12 week plan of activity to lose excess weight.
Weight gain usually happens gradually over the years due to “modern-day life and the odd unhealthy habit”.
But it is not just visible weight gain we need to be aware of, fat can also build up around vital organs. When this happens, it makes it harder for the body to fight illness, such as heart disease, cancer, and Covid.
Small changes
However, there are some simple small changes that can be made to diet and lifestyle which can help shed excess weight.
Dr Alison Tedstone, chief nutritionist of PHE says: “The past 16 months have caused many to change their habits, so it is not a surprise to see so many people reporting weight gain”.
It is often difficult to lose weight and keep it off, which is why PHE are providing “a range of support options to help motivate people and help them maintain a healthy weight”. Dr Tedstone says it is “never too late to make changes to help improve your health”.
The Better Health website is full of ideas and support for people to find the right solution for them, and to look for a local weight-management service. They are also offering free or discount offers by partnering with organisations like Weight Watchers, Slimming World and Noom.
