Maneskin Storming UK Charts

Following their success at Eurovision, Italian music stars Maneskin have a wave of new fans. The buzz around them continues, as two of their songs are likely to feature in this week’s official UK Top 40.

The glam rock band can now count one of the world’s biggest A-list stars among their fans. The group’s bassist Victoria De Angelis is amazed that they are followed by Miley Cyrus. They have also received messages from Royal Blood and Franz Ferdinand, one of their inspirations.

Zitti E Buoni, their winning Eurovision entry, entered the UK charts last week at number 17. This week, another of their tracks, I Wanna Be Your Slave, is also due to appear. And both songs have topped Spotify’s UK Viral Top 50.

Victoria says that it is “incredible” as it is “not easy for Italian artists” to enter the UK chart.

An emotional win

MÃ¥neskin were the favourites to win the contest in Rotterdam, but never felt they fitted into the “Eurovision box”. They just wanted to be themselves and didn’t and not just conform to the usual music associated with the show. They are so happy at the win because they “really wanted to be authentic”.

But the song, Zitti E Buoni, was always going to do well. The performance had all the elements of a Eurovision classic, including a standout vocal, an act with stage presence and charisma, plus a load of pyrotechnics. The band gave it everything they had.

Winning the contest was a very emotional moment, and the band were even captured crying. Many people told them the act wouldn’t work at Eurovision, but they were all proved wrong. The audience at home loved their music, and that is what matters, as that is who they play for.

However, the joy of winning was tainted by accusations of lead singer Damiano David taking drugs live on TV. He was later cleared of all allegations by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), following a voluntary drugs test.

Growing success

Zitti E Buoni is the first Italian language song to enter the UK Top 20 since opera legend Luciano Pavarotti 29 years ago.

The band are seeing success in charts everywhere. Their streaming numbers, and TikTok impressions, continue to rise, as more people get into their music. They say it is “unbelievable” and a “once-in-a-lifetime” moment.

In 2018, the group came second place in the Italian version of The X Factor. They have had huge success in their home country since then. They have a number one album and several platinum selling singles to their name.

The quartet started out writing most of their songs in English, but saw better success in their homeland with songs sung in Italian. Their goal has always been to write songs in both languages, and the Eurovision win has given them the “chance to experiment”. Performing at the competition gave the opportunity for the band to appear in front of a large audience around the world.

Maneskin would love to perform at big UK festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading or Leeds, and plan an extended tour at the end of the year.
