Not satisfied with ensuring literacy is available for all, Marcus Rashford is on a one man mission to make sure “no one goes to bed hungry”. He has launched family friendly meals which will be available for all on Instagram and in supermarkets.
Marcus will be learning alongside the families who use these recipes, as Chef Tom Kerridge teaches him how to cook 52 cheap family friendly meals. Stir fry, Chicken Satay, Chicken Pie and broccoli and cauliflower cheese. All staples from childhood which are nutritious and filling, without breaking the bank.
Mr Kerridge, a Michelin star chef, is setting his own challenge, to make the ultimate fish finger sandwich. A tribute to his childhood being the first meal he ever learned to cook at 14 years old. Whereas Mr Rashford has added Spaghetti Bolognese to the menu as it is still one of his favourite meals.
The campaign is aimed at teaching families to cook, without the pressure and fancy gadgets. IT is for those with limited time and little to no catering experience. Tom says it is “like learning to ride a bike”. Stripping cooking back to its basics and making it fun again; peeling vegetables, dicing onions and browning meat.
Mr Rushford, whose culinary skills are rudimentary, is going to be taught live in hopes to inspire those young people “who are afraid of making mistakes”. Talking to the BBC, he gave a little insight into why this project is so important to him. “Is it fair people go hungry? No, its not fair. Whether a child or adult, it doesn’t change the fact that is is unfair if somebody goes without eating a meal”
Marcus Rashford – a man on a mission to change kids lives
This is not the first project that Marcus Rashford has launched, although it is his largest campaign to date. Drawing from experience, Marcus recalls how he would fall asleep at school when he hadn’t eaten.
Mr Rashford is telling his story; about how his families used food banks and ate free school meals daily. A private person, this is not a story Marcus would normally share, but he wants to end the ‘silly’ stigma behind getting help if you need it.
Continuing the campaign he started last year, Mr Rashford is aiming to have free school meals extended throughout the summer for families who use them in school. He is actively encouraging the uptake of healthy start vouchers for low income families, making sure they get money off of fruit and vegetables.
He understands that the extension of school meals is just a short term solution against childhood hunger. Marcus is on a mission to stop the family going hungry, calling in help from experts and large supermarket chains to help as many of the 2.4 million children living in food-insecure households.
