Mary Queen of Scots jewels stole from Arundel Castle

Gold, Silver and irreplaceable treasures of historical significance have been stole from Arundel Castle, West Sussex. The raid is valued at over one million.

One of the most valuable pieces stolen in the raid on the castle is Mary Queen of Scots Rosary beads. Mary wore the golden beads on the way to her execution on the 8th February 1587.

The burglar alarm activated shortly after 10:30pm, alerting staff to a potential robbery. The Sussex Police, who are investigating the crime, believe the point of entry was a window. Once inside, they smashed the cabinet to steal the possessions inside.

Although the beads hold “little intrinsic value as metal”, they are an irreplaceable as a piece of Howard family history or the nations heritage. In addition to Mary’s rosary beads, the thieves also stole coronation cups given to by the Queen to the Earl Marshal of the day.

A 4 x 4 saloon, which is believed to be the getaway vehicle, has been discovered abandoned In Barlavington. It is under examination with the police for any potential leads.

Why are the beads of Mary Queen of Scots so special?

Amongst the rest of the items stolen, the Arundel Castle trustees are heartbroken at the loss of her rosemary beads.

Text in the guidebook, published on Lady Jane Grey website, describes the exquisite piece. Made of gold and enamel, the rosary beads were a gift from The Countess Of Arundel. The golden cross was from a monk in Paris and bequeathed to Queen Mary by Mary Howard in 1696.

A spokesman for the Arundel Castle Trustees confirms the stolen items has significant monetary value. However, the artifacts are more valuable as part of the Duke of Norfolk’s collection. They are urging anyone with information to come forward to the police as soon as possible.

The Duke of Norfolk has been in the seat of Arundel Castle for over 400 years. The castle was burgled on Friday, just three days after reopening following the pandemic.
